Hyenas emerge from their hole

One of the advantages of a summer safari is that the bush is filled with babies again. The highlight for the last few weeks has undoubtedly been an active hyena den site near to the lodge.

Hyenas will often seek out old termite mounds to use as den sites. They will usually excavate areas where aardvarks have caused damage to the mound. The excavations can often lead quite deep into these sandy structures.

Up until now we have witnessed three hyena pups emerging from the holes. One is already a little older and has developed spots on its coat. There are another two pups which are still completely black and are still too nervous to head too far away from the hole.

Over the next few weeks the mom’s will start to move off and hunt for longer periods of time. The pups will slowly gain confidence and start to explore their new surrounds.
