Hyenas without their spots

The hyenas have been at it again. Our local den has been a hive of activity lately.

There have been a handful of females that have given birth at the den and most of the pups are starting to emerge from the hole.

The little ones are still rather skittish and do not easily head too far away from the mother. The mom will excavate a deep hole within the termite mound, allowing the pups to make a quick escape should danger approach.

It will take around a month before the pups will start to change from their black coat to receiving their spots. They will also start to gain more confidence and venture further and further away from the safety of the hole.
