Adventure Tours in Mpumalanga
Imagine telling your friends about that one time in South Africa when you encountered an entire pride of lions in the middle of the bushveld, or when you took a hot air balloon over the plains of the Lowveld…
That’s not to say there isn’t cultural value in adventure tours. The truth is, these kinds of experiences contain a rich history. The African landscape has long-inspired awe and contemplation. When the rest of the world feels somewhat tamed, Africa still holds within it an unbridled sense of freedom, and a fascinating history as ancient as the savannah.
If this sounds like your kind of holiday, here are a few adventure tours to be found in and around Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve.
Wildlife Encounters
Here at Leopard Hills, we have a host of ways in which you can encounter wildlife. This wilderness area is worthy of Sir David Attenborough himself!
Relaxing at the lodge, the odds are extremely high that you’ll see some of the beautiful creatures South Africa is famous for as they amble past, but game drives are where the true magic happens!
On open game viewing vehicles, specifically designed for Leopard Hills, guests will get to experience the bush in absolute comfort and safety.
Hosted by our knowledgeable guides and trackers, this is your chance to get up close and personal with the creatures who call this place home, from elephants, buffalo and leopards, to lions and rhinos.
Yes, the Big Five are incredible to see, but don’t let this blinker you from the other sights and sounds of the bush. There is no insignificant sighting; be it a dung beetle doing its thing or a stately Martial eagle swooping down from its perch.
Of course, the Sabi Sand is famous for its leopard population, and our guides know most individuals by name, having studied their movements for years. Allow them to enthrall you with tales of the unique secret life of these elusive big cats that give our camp its name.
If you’d like to experience the bush at a deeper level, we also offer walking trails.
Exploring the African wilderness on foot gives guests a deep sense of place and connectedness with the world around them.
Away from the noise of the vehicle, we come to understand our place in nature and awaken our senses to the sight, sounds and even the smells of the bush.
Walking safaris are led by only the most experienced guides and are tailored around guests’ schedule, fitness level and interests.
Fly over the Blyde River Canyon in a helicopter
If you haven’t heard of the Blyde River Canyon, Google it right now.
Stunning, right?
We don’t think we have to do much more to convince you that taking a helicopter flight over this 26 km stretch of natural splendour is worth it. Its lush, subtropical covering makes it one of the largest “green canyons” on Earth and flying over it is the only way to truly appreciate its beauty.
The Mpumalanga Helicopter Company offers an awe-inspiring tour that takes guests over the twists and turns of the canyon, passing staggering rock formations and famous landmarks like Bourkes Luck Potholes, God’s Window and the Three Rondavels from the air.
Bonus: We arrange for guests to be collected directly from the lodge! A delicious picnic lunch will be enjoyed at a secluded spot with spectacular views before returning back to the lodge for your afternoon game drive.

Hot Air Balloon Tours
There is nothing like looking down on the plains of the Lowveld from a hot air balloon.
Sun Catchers are based near Hoedspruit and offer hour-long tours for guests, launching at sunrise. They have been operational since 2003 and have a sterling track-record, so you’ll be in excellent hands.
The scenery on these adventure tours makes them utterly unique. The topography below you is a mixture of farmlands and private nature reserves, but the real pièce de résistance is the Drakensberg Escarpment – a stunning vista of folds and valleys that is sure to take your breath away.
